My task was to make a compelling visual counterpart to the music of this extraordinary band that reimagines the brilliant, unclassifiable early music of Peter Gabriel.
I drew my inspiration from hours of listening to Peter's restless thematic and sonic explorations while doodling extensively with pen and paper. I wanted to identify imagery that would be both accessible and mysterious.
The solution combined typeface, color and imagery. I customized the logo font to resemble the one used on the original album covers. Since the original covers featured blue and yellow, I hit on red as the keynote color since it was the missing primary, and for its unmatchable power and boldness.
The icons scattered throughout came in response to the lyrics. Each can be traced to one or more songs, such as Lay Your Hands On Me (a hand), Intruder (wire clippers), Here Comes the Flood (a wave), and finally, the overarching "Cone of Vision" graphic that is my take on the philosophical tension present throughout these songs.
I loved the challenge of making something brand new that references an existing work. In addition to the cd cover I created two T-shirt designs (called, respectively, "Cone of Vision" and "Flood/Intruder", shown here), and the event poster.
