In the studio: Heighten

As I paint I envision the space, the varnished wainscoting and its many variations of orange, gold and brown and how I will use them. I picture cutting the pieces and taping them to the walls in an on-the-spot compositional frenzy, improvising and following my eye....

Today I began work on Heighten, my installation project at Seattle's University Heights Center that will treat an entire interior as a gigantic collage painting. I've wanted to do a project like this ever since I installed This Storied Heart, my largest collage painting to date, in a gallery with pieces spraying off the work onto the walls.

This is what I love: sticking pieces up, stepping back, shifting, changing, adding, taking away, destroying, remaking, rearranging, a piece more, a color less in a live, in-the-moment debate with the wall till to my eye it balances. I love the process of designing itself. But for it to work, I'm going to have to be very well-prepared...
